Darker evenings and cooler temperatures are a sure sign of autumn and the coming of winter in the UK, which means it’s time to perform some important checks on your car before driving anywhere.

As the weather changes, getting colder and wetter, it can significantly affect the driving conditions, as well as affect your visibility on the road. But a few checks can not only keep you from harm while driving but will also ensure your car survives the harsh conditions of the British winter.

Here are five checks you need to do before driving in the winter

Tyres

The frost, snow and sleet of winter can cause problems for drivers and cars, but ensuring you have the appropriate tread on your tyres will help you get a better grip on the road.

A quick way to check your tyre tread is to place a 20 pence coin into one of the primary grooves of the tyre. If you can still see the outer ring of the coin, then your tyre is worn and unsafe and should be replaced. If your tyre has a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm, then the outer ring of the 20 pence piece should be hidden.

Windscreen

Winter weather significantly affects visibility on the roads, so you must check your windscreen. Check your wiper blades, and if they are dry, cracked or misshapen, then you are best advised to replace them.

You should also check that you have enough windscreen fluid, by opening the bonnet and looking for a plastic bottle with a windscreen symbol on it, then top it up if needed.

Check your windscreen for chips and cracks too, as frosty weather can turn small cracks into big ones.

Antifreeze

Your car will warn you on the dashboard if there are issues with the engine cooling system, but finding a problem sooner will help prevent any serious damage. When water freezes it expands and this can lead to cracked and broken pipes, affecting the performance of the engine.

Consult your car’s manual to locate the coolant tank, but ensure that your car has fully cooled down before you open the tank, as hot and pressurised water can cause serious injury. Note that different brands and types of antifreeze may not mix well, so always try to stick to the same type.

Battery

Battery failure is a common reason for car breakdowns during the winter, so completing a routine check could save you a lot of problems. Visually inspect the battery, ensuring that the clamp and terminals are tight and secure.

Brush the battery clean of any dirt and debris to help extend its lifespan, and then check the batterys fluid level. If the battery plates are exposed then top up with distilled water until they are covered again.

Lights

The shorter days and inclement weather mean you will be using your headlights more, so ensure they are all working effectively. Simply turn each light on one by one, walking around the vehicle to check they’re working and bright, before checking the next set.

To check the rear lights, ask a friend or family member to stand near the back of the vehicle while stationary, while you check the reversing and brake lights. Both sides should be fully functioning and bright. If not, ensure to get them changed before you head back out on the road.
